Blake Paine, a 19-year-old man from Wildomar, California, was a son and a twin brother. His life was cut short on the afternoon of November 8, 2020, when he was shot in the parking lot of the Calvary Chapel church in the 100 block of Riley Street in Lake Elsinore. According to his mother, Blake’s twin brother, Brad, was with him when the shooting occurred. Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of the shooting around 4:30 p.m. and found Blake on the ground with a gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to Inland Valley Medical Center, but he died from his injuries a short time later.

The investigation into the homicide moved quickly. The assailants had fled the scene before deputies arrived, but the Sheriff’s Department’s Central Homicide Unit soon identified persons of interest. Just one day after the shooting, on November 9, investigators arrested 18-year-old Joshua Emanuel Navarro of Lake Elsinore. The search for additional suspects continued for over a month. On December 14, authorities arrested a second suspect, 21-year-old Bryan Richard King II of Carson. The final arrest came on January 7, 2021, when a 16-year-old boy was taken into custody. With the third arrest, investigators announced they were not seeking any other suspects.

Navarro was initially charged with murder, assault with a semiautomatic rifle, and possession of an assault weapon. King was booked on suspicion of murder and multiple weapons charges. The juvenile suspect was booked into Southwest Juvenile Hall, and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against all three individuals. The case against the juvenile was handled in juvenile court and has since concluded.

The two adult defendants, Navarro and King, were tried before separate juries at the Southwest Justice Center in French Valley. In July 2025, both men were convicted. On July 25, a jury found Bryan Richard King II guilty, and on July 28, a separate jury convicted Joshua Emanuel Navarro. Both were found guilty of first-degree murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and possession of an assault rifle. As of that month, both men were facing sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole and were awaiting their sentencing hearings.
