On October 14, 2020, Gustavo Morales, a 21-year-old resident of Lake Elsinore, California, was tragically shot and killed. The incident occurred in the 500 block of Quail Drive, where deputies from the Lake Elsinore Station responded to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Morales with apparent gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, Morales was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department's Central Homicide Unit and the Lake Elsinore Station took over the investigation immediately.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of 19-year-old Noah Arath Buenrostro-Quartaro, also from Lake Elsinore. Buenrostro-Quartaro was apprehended on October 15, 2020, by deputies assigned to the Gang Task Force. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with the murder of Gustavo Morales. The authorities confirmed that there were no other suspects involved in the case. Buenrostro-Quartaro faced additional charges, including sentence-enhancing allegations related to the use of a firearm and causing great bodily injury.
During his arraignment, Buenrostro-Quartaro pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court proceedings included a felony settlement conference scheduled for December 2, 2020, at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta. Buenrostro-Quartaro was held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center. The motive behind the shooting was not disclosed by the authorities, and the investigation remained active, with the sheriff's department urging anyone with information to come forward.
