Diego Anthony Rodriguez, an 18-year-old resident of Imperial Beach, California, tragically lost his life on April 10, 2020. The incident occurred when Rodriguez was dropped off at Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista around 12:45 a.m., suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Unit confirmed that the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of
death was classified as a homicide.
The investigation quickly led authorities to a crime scene at a home in the 400 block of 7th Street in Imperial Beach. There, they encountered 19-year-old Johnathan Reibeling, who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder. Reibeling was booked into the San Diego Central Jail. The arrest marked the beginning of a legal process that would see Reibeling facing serious charges related to the death of his friend.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Reibeling pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and a gun-use allegation. This plea came after he initially faced a murder charge. During the court hearings, Reibeling described the shooting as a "horrible accident," asserting that Rodriguez was his best friend. Despite his claims, several members of Rodriguez's family expressed their disbelief in the accidental nature of the shooting, suggesting it was either intentional or due to gross negligence.
The court ultimately sentenced Reibeling to six years in state prison for his role in Rodriguez's death. The judge, while addressing the victim's family, noted that the police investigation had not uncovered a clear motive for why Reibeling would intentionally kill Rodriguez.
