Andrew McCoy, a 47-year-old resident of Pittsburg, California, was tragically killed on the evening of May 6, 2019. McCoy was shot multiple times while in his vehicle on Shoreline Drive. He managed to run into a nearby home where his mother was on the phone with emergency dispatchers, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to John Muir Medical Center.
The initial investigation revealed that McCoy had been ambushed by an unknown assailant who approached him and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
The investigation into McCoy's death led to the arrest of Darrin "Mississippi" Lynch, a 55-year-old man from Antioch. Lynch was charged with murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors argued that Lynch had hidden in a bush for two minutes, waiting for McCoy to pass by. When McCoy approached, Lynch called out to him and then opened fire. The motive for the murder was not clearly established, but it was noted that McCoy and Lynch had been seen arguing a month before the shooting. Lynch's defense claimed that the prosecution's witnesses were unreliable and that the police investigation was flawed.
In August 2022, a Contra Costa jury convicted Lynch of McCoy's murder, along with a special circumstances enhancement for lying in wait, which made him eligible for life without parole. Lynch was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole and was transferred to North Kern State Prison in December 2023 to begin serving his sentence. Lynch is currently appealing his conviction and sentence, a process that is expected to take several years.
