Brian Maxey, a 20-year-old resident of Fresno, California, tragically lost his life on April 28, 2019, in a violent incident that also claimed the life of 19-year-old Kiara Austin. The couple was visiting friends at an apartment complex in central Fresno when they were confronted by a group of gang members. As they attempted to leave, the gang members opened fire on their vehicle, firing at least 26 rounds. The car, driven by Maxey, crashed through a brick wall and ended up in a canal.
Both Maxey and Austin were pronounced dead at the scene, while three other passengers survived the attack.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the attack was unprovoked and that Maxey and Austin were innocent victims caught in a gang-related confrontation. The Fresno Police Department quickly launched an investigation, gathering surveillance footage and tips from the public. This led to the arrest of Donovan Kelley, a 19-year-old gang member, who was identified as one of the shooters. Kelley was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and several other charges related to the incident.
During the trial, it was revealed that Kelley and his accomplices had fired on the vehicle to protect their gang turf. The court proceedings were emotionally charged, with Austin's mother expressing the profound impact the loss had on her family, especially Austin's three young children. In June 2021, Kelley was convicted and sentenced to over 206 years in prison, along with six life sentences, reflecting the severity of his crimes and his previous violent offenses.
