The investigation into Othman's death revealed that he and a friend
had arranged to meet a group of individuals to purchase marijuana. However, the transaction was a setup, and the suspects did not intend to sell any drugs. Instead, they planned to rob Othman, who had brought "show money" but not enough to complete the purchase. During the encounter, guns were drawn, and Othman was shot. The complexity of the case and the involvement of multiple individuals made it challenging for law enforcement to piece together the events of that night.
Nearly three years after the murder, Belmont Police announced the arrests of four suspects connected to the case. The suspects included 23-year-old Ruben Gonzalez Magallanes from Indianapolis, Indiana, 21-year-old Antonio Valencia from Concord, a 19-year-old from South San Francisco, and a 17-year-old from Mountain View. The names of the younger suspects were withheld due to their ages at the time of the crime. Magallanes was already in custody in Indiana on a separate murder charge, while Valencia was held in San Mateo County Jail without bail on charges of murder, assault with a firearm, second-degree robbery, and conspiracy.
