The incident occurred early in the morning at an apartment located on Ralston Avenue, where Jones had gone to retrieve personal belongings following a recent breakup with his ex-girlfriend, Jolie Harris. Jones was accompanied by his sister and cousin during this visit.
The apartment was also occupied by several other individuals, including Jovhon Stewart, who was present with his girlfriend and other friends.
The situation escalated when an argument broke out between Jones and Stewart. According to reports, Stewart shot Jones four times, with two bullets hitting him in the back, one in the head, and another in the arm. Jones was unarmed at the time of the shooting. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear, but it was noted that Stewart was identified as the shooter by multiple witnesses present at the scene.
Following the incident, Stewart was apprehended by police at a BART station in Union City after a four-day investigation. He was taken into custody without incident and held on a no-bail arrest warrant. Stewart faced charges of second-degree murder and was later convicted in February 2020. During the trial, it was revealed that Stewart had attempted to dissuade his girlfriend from cooperating with the police by making threats, which were recorded during jail calls. This led to an additional conviction for felony dissuasion of a witness.
In June 2020, Stewart was sentenced to 42 years and eight months in state prison for the murder of DeJohn Jones. During the sentencing, Stewart took responsibility for his actions and apologized to Jones' mother.
