Francisco Rafael Montes, a 28-year-old resident of Gardena, California, tragically lost his life on July 31, 2018. The incident occurred after a night of partying at a trailer park in Gardena, where Montes was present with several others, including the shooter and his wife. The gathering took a violent turn when the shooter, for reasons still unclear, opened fire on the group. The initial shooting resulted in the death of Dolores Sanchez and injuries to three others, including a pregnant woman.
Montes, along with the shooter's wife, was forced to drive the shooter away from the scene.
The situation escalated further when the shooter directed Montes to pull over on the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard onramp to the southbound 710 Freeway in Lynwood. At this location, the shooter fatally shot Montes and attempted to kill his wife, but the gun malfunctioned, allowing her to survive. Montes' body was left at the scene, and the shooter fled in the vehicle.
The investigation into Montes' death led to the identification and arrest of Selvin Fabian Salazar. Salazar was charged with multiple counts, including the murders of Francisco Rafael Montes and Dolores Sanchez, as well as the attempted murders of two others. The case was prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, and Salazar was found guilty on several charges, including three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, carjacking, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
In October 2024, Salazar was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court proceedings revealed that Salazar's actions were part of a violent spree that began in Gardena and ended in Lynwood. The sentencing brought some measure of closure to the victims' families, who had endured years of grief and uncertainty. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gang-related violence and the importance of thorough investigations and prosecutions in bringing justice to the victims and their loved ones.
