December 2021, a breakthrough occurred in the investigation. Nathyn Timothy Gallardo, a 22-year-old resident of Soledad, was arrested and charged with the murder of Joseph Suniga. The arrest was the result of a collaborative effort between the Greenfield Police Department, the Monterey County Cold Case Task Force, and several other law enforcement agencies. Gallardo was identified as the suspect after detectives revisited the case and gathered new information linking him to the crime. The arrest was made following a search warrant executed at Gallardo's residence in Soledad.
In addition to Gallardo's arrest, the investigation led to the apprehension of Isaac Aguilar, who was found in possession of a "ghost" gun, a rifle, narcotics, and a butane hash oil lab. Aguilar's arrest was part of the broader investigation into Suniga's murder, highlighting the extensive efforts by law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice. The case remains a poignant reminder of the impact of violent crime on small communities and the relentless pursuit of justice by dedicated law enforcement officers.
