Joel was found with a gunshot wound on South Myers Street near Buccaneer Park around 4:45 a.m. Despite being rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, he succumbed to his injuries less than an hour later. Joel's death came as a devastating blow to his family, who were still mourning the loss of his mother, Melba Bishop, a former Oceanside City Councilmember, who had passed away two years earlier
after battling cancer.
The investigation into Joel Bishop's death led to the arrest of Hector Galvez, 32, and Jamie Radloff, 29, both of whom were apprehended in Hemet, California, later that same day. During the arrest, Galvez was shot and wounded by a Hemet police officer. Both suspects were charged with murder, with Galvez facing an additional charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The police have not disclosed the exact nature of the relationship between Bishop and the suspects, but it was confirmed that they knew each other. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, though gang activity was ruled out as a factor.
The murder trial for Galvez and Radloff began in March 2019.
