Keith Wayne Boyer, a 53-year-old police officer from Whittier, California, tragically lost his life on February 20, 2017. Officer Boyer was responding to what appeared to be a routine traffic accident at the intersection of Colima Road and Mar Vista Street. Unbeknownst to him and his fellow officers, the vehicle involved in the crash was stolen and driven by Christopher Michael Mejia, a recently paroled gang member.
As Officer Boyer and another officer approached the scene, Mejia suddenly opened fire, fatally wounding Boyer and injuring the other officer. Despite their injuries, the officers managed to return fire and wound Mejia.
The investigation revealed that Mejia had committed another murder earlier that same day. He had shot and killed his cousin, Roy Roger Torres, in East Los Angeles before stealing Torres' car and driving to Whittier.
