Jesus Silva Hernandez, a 15-year-old resident of Salinas, California, tragically lost his life on January 22, 2017, after being shot multiple times on January 20, 2017. The incident occurred around 12:50 PM on the 700 block of Mae Avenue. Hernandez was using a Wi-Fi signal from a nearby location and was on the phone when a man in dark clothing approached him and opened fire. The suspect then fled the scene in a waiting black 4-door sedan, which was last seen heading westbound on Del Monte.
Despite being transported to Natividad Medical Center for treatment, Hernandez succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The Salinas Police Department's preliminary investigation revealed that Hernandez had no known history with local law enforcement and was not affiliated with any gangs. However, the manner of the shooting led investigators to believe that the suspects were associated with local gangs, prompting them to treat the case as gang-related. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and no arrests have been made in connection with Hernandez's death.
Hernandez's death marked the sixth homicide in Salinas in 2017, highlighting the ongoing issue of gang violence in the area. The community was left in shock and mourning, as Hernandez was described as a young man with no criminal background who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
