Orlando Morales, a 34-year-old resident of McFarland, California, was found dead on August 24, 2016, in Delano, California. Initially, authorities believed Morales had died in a traffic collision after discovering his body inside a vehicle that had left the roadway and overturned at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Glenwood Street. Morales' death led to the arrest of Jose Medrano, a 23-year-old gang member. Medrano was charged with first-degree murder and subsequently convicted in June 2017. During the trial, it was revealed that Medrano, along with an accomplice named Pete Santiago, had been involved in the shooting. Santiago, who was also charged with murder, accepted a plea deal to avoid the death penalty and life in prison without the possibility of parole.
