Isaac Urena, a 20-year-old resident of Covina, California, tragically lost his life on August 13, 2016. The incident occurred during a planned meeting for an online jewelry sale at the parking lot of Clearman’s North Woods Inn in Covina. Urena, accompanied by a friend, was attempting to sell jewelry to a prospective buyer when the situation escalated into a robbery. During the encounter, Urena was shot by the assailants.
His friend, who was driving, managed to flee the scene with the mortally wounded Urena and drove to Faith Community Church in West Covina, where paramedics attempted to save his life. Unfortunately, Urena was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Urena's death led to the arrest of two suspects, Adam Hernandez, 21, and Christopher Avila, 20, both from Covina. They were apprehended by Covina police detectives and SWAT officers following leads and executing search warrants. The suspects were charged with murder and robbery. According to police reports, the suspects had arranged the meeting under the pretense of purchasing jewelry, but their true intention was to rob Urena and his friend. During the robbery, Urena was shot, and the suspects fled the scene. A handgun was recovered during the searches, which police believe may be linked to the shooting.
Hernandez and Avila were held in lieu of $1 million bail each, which was later increased to $2 million. They were scheduled to appear in court for their initial hearings. The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the crime and the swift action taken by law enforcement to apprehend the suspects. The investigation was described as relentless, with officers working around the clock to bring the perpetrators to justice.
