Shaniece Lenyeh Davis, a 27-year-old woman, tragically lost her life on July 13, 2016, in Hawthorne, California. According to reports, Davis was staying at an apartment on Oxford Avenue, a location known for frequent disturbances and drug-related activities. The apartment was described as a "crash pad" for various individuals, and tensions had been escalating due to the tenant's attempts to clear out the premises.
On the night of the incident, an argument erupted between Davis and the tenant, John Thomas "JT" McDowell, who had been trying to evict her and others from the apartment. In a bid to gain support, McDowell texted his niece, Jennifer Hickman, asking her to come over.
Hickman, also known by the alias "Peaches," arrived at the apartment armed with a gun. A verbal altercation ensued between Hickman and Davis, which quickly escalated into violence. Shots were fired, and Davis was struck. Despite the apartment being crowded at the time, no witnesses came forward to confirm seeing the actual shooting. Davis was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after.
Following the incident, Jennifer Hickman was arrested on suspicion of murder. During her arrest at an Inglewood motel, investigators found a semi-automatic handgun, which was being tested to determine its involvement in the shooting. Hickman faced charges of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. She pleaded not guilty during her arraignment and was held on a $3 million bail. Hickman, a documented gang member, had used multiple aliases in the past, complicating the investigation.
John Thomas McDowell was also arrested on suspicion of murder but was released after the district attorney's office declined to file charges against him. McDowell claimed he had no knowledge that his niece would bring a gun when he asked for her assistance. A week after his release, McDowell was stabbed outside his apartment, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
