Derion Elias White, a 23-year-old resident of San Diego, California, tragically lost his life on June 29, 2016. Derion was shot and killed in the East Village area of downtown San Diego. According to reports, the incident occurred around 12:10 a.m. near the intersection of 17th Street and Island Avenue. Derion was entering a car occupied by his girlfriend and a friend when an unknown assailant approached and fired two shots, striking Derion at least once in the upper body.
Despite immediate efforts, Derion succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The suspect fled the scene on foot and was last seen running southbound on 17th Street. The suspect was described as a tall, thin man with dreadlocks, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.
The investigation into Derion's murder revealed that he was targeted in an execution-style killing. The San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit took charge of the case, but the identity of the shooter remained unknown for some time. The case took a significant turn when Deshaun Prescott, a known gang member, was arrested and charged with the murders of Derion Elias White and another young man, Greggory Davis. The prosecution argued that gang rivalries were the motive behind the killings. Derion was allegedly part of a gang allied with Prescott's gang, and the murder was seen as retaliation for the killing of a member of Prescott's gang by a member of Derion's gang.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence linking Prescott to the crime scene, including DNA found on a utility box and a palm print on the car's rear door. Despite the defense's argument that Prescott had no motive to kill Derion, as they were close friends, the jury found Prescott guilty of both murders. In May 2019, Prescott was convicted and later sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in San Diego and the devastating impact it has on the community.
