Anthony Ronald Palomares, a 23-year-old Latino, tragically lost his life on April 5, 2016, in Santa Fe Springs, California. The incident occurred near the intersection of Telegraph Road and Bartley Avenue, close to Friendship Park. On the evening of April 5, around 6:30 p.m., Whittier police received reports of gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, officers found Palomares, a transient, lying in a grassy area with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 8:22 p.m. on April 6.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two individuals approach Palomares and engage in an argument. During the altercation, one of the men drew a handgun and shot Palomares. The suspects fled the scene, prompting an investigation by the Whittier police. Two days after the shooting, police arrested 25-year-old Daniel Esquer, also a transient, in connection with the murder. A week later, 17-year-old Marcus Rene Garcia, another transient, was also taken into custody. Both suspects were charged with murder and pleaded not guilty. They were scheduled to return to court on June 2 for further proceedings.
The investigation revealed that the motive behind the shooting was a disagreement between Palomares and the suspects, who were known to each other prior to the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office filed formal charges against Esquer and Garcia, including special allegations that the crime was gang-related and involved the use of a handgun. Esquer was identified as the individual who pulled the trigger. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in the area and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such crimes.
Throughout the investigation, police initially detained two other individuals, Cruz Bermudez and Adam Giavelli, but they were later released without charges related to the shooting. However, Bermudez was re-arrested in connection with a different case and held without bail. The arrests of Esquer and Garcia brought some measure of closure to the case, but the community continued to grapple with the broader implications of gang-related violence and its impact on public safety.
