Augustine "Gus" Vegas, a 58-year-old veteran officer of the Richmond Police Department, was tragically shot and killed in his Vallejo home on February 11, 2016. Vegas, who had served the department for 15 years, was known for his roles as a Range Master and Homicide Detective. On the morning of his death, he was shot multiple times around 4:30 a.m. inside his residence on Narragansett Court.
The incident occurred in the presence of his family, adding to the shock and grief experienced by his loved ones and the community.
The investigation quickly identified the suspect as Robert James Vega, the father of Vegas' six-year-old grandson. Robert Vega, 30, was arrested shortly after the incident in Fairfield, approximately 15 miles from the crime scene. He was charged with voluntary manslaughter and personal use of a firearm. During the trial, it was revealed that Robert Vega had a history of post-traumatic stress disorder and had been using marijuana in the days leading up to the shooting. Despite his plea of insanity, the jury found him sane at the time of the crime.
In December 2017, Robert Vega was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the killing of Augustine Vegas. The sentencing brought some closure to the family and colleagues of Gus Vegas, who remembered him as a dedicated officer and a loving family man. The case highlighted the devastating impact of mental health issues and substance abuse, as well as the profound loss felt by the community and the Richmond Police Department.
