Federico Moreno Jr., aged 37, tragically lost his life on June 8, 2015, in Arvin, California. The incident occurred at El Potrero Night Club, where Moreno and another man, Jorge Zavala, were fatally shot. The shooting also left a third man injured, though he survived the attack. The perpetrator, Juan Pablo Vega, was later apprehended and faced multiple charges related to the incident.
The investigation revealed that Vega's girlfriend, Lourdes Olvera, played a significant role in
instigating the violence. She reportedly urged Vega to come to the club and confront the men who were bothering her. This confrontation escalated into a deadly shooting. Vega fled the scene but was eventually captured by U.S. Marshals and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation personnel on Highway 58 near Cottonwood Road.
The legal proceedings following the incident were extensive. Vega initially faced the death penalty but ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. In April 2024, he was sentenced to 69 years to life in prison. During the sentencing, emotional statements were made by the victims' families, expressing their grief and the impact of the tragedy on their lives. Vega, in his statements, expressed remorse and accepted responsibility for his actions.
Lourdes Olvera also faced legal consequences for her involvement. After her 2016 murder trial ended in a hung jury, she pleaded guilty to two counts of soliciting a murder and a charge of threatening a witness. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison but has since been released.
The case saw numerous delays, some attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, which postponed court proceedings. Despite these delays, justice was eventually served, bringing some closure to the families affected by this senseless act of violence.
