Jose Luis Salgado, a 28-year-old Latino male, tragically lost his life on February 26, 2014, in Whittier, California. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's records, Salgado was shot and subsequently found by Whittier police responding to a call about a "man down" on Lambert Road. He was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood.

Further investigation into the case revealed that Salgado's death was a result of mistaken identity. Robert Anthony Garcia, a member of the Canta Ranas gang, was later arrested and charged with the murder. Garcia, who was 22 years old at the time of his sentencing, believed Salgado to be a member of a rival gang. However, it was later confirmed that Salgado had no gang affiliations. On the night of the incident, Garcia and an accomplice had been tagging the area with graffiti as part of an effort to expand their gang's territory. When they encountered Salgado, an exchange of words occurred, leading Garcia to fatally shoot him.
The case proceeded to trial, where Garcia was found guilty of murder and additional charges related to vehicle theft. During the trial, a gang expert testified about the Canta Ranas gang's activities and their intent to dominate the area. Garcia was ultimately sentenced to 50 years in prison for his role in the murder of Jose Luis Salgado.
