Fernando Felix Solano, a 16-year-old from Oceanside, California, tragically lost his life on May 3, 2011. He was shot to death alongside 14-year-old Sandra Salgado at Libby Lake Park, a location known for gang-related violence. On the night of the incident, Solano and Salgado were spending time together at the park when they were approached by gang members who mistakenly identified them as rival gang members.
The suspects, Al’C Bejaran, Kenneth Hamilton, and Justin Gibson, were all documented gang members. Bejaran, who was already in prison for a parole violation at the time, fatally shot the teenagers before fleeing the scene.
The bodies of Solano and Salgado were discovered around 10:30 p.m. in the northeast area of Libby Lake Park. Solano was found sitting on a chair with blood on his chest, while Salgado was lying on the ground nearby. The investigation revealed that neither of the victims was involved in gang activities, making their deaths a tragic case of mistaken identity.
The legal proceedings following the murders saw significant developments. In November 2013, the three suspects entered guilty pleas. Bejaran pled guilty to two counts of murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hamilton and Gibson, who were with Bejaran during the shootings, pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter charges and were each sentenced to 20 years in prison. They must serve 85% of their sentences before becoming eligible for parole. The plea bargains and subsequent sentencing brought some closure to the families of the victims, although the pain of their loss remains.
Libby Lake Park has continued to be a focal point for gang-related violence, with additional shootings occurring in the years following the deaths of Solano and Salgado. The community and law enforcement have made efforts to address the violence and improve safety in the area, but the park remains a symbol of the tragic events that took the lives of two young teenagers.
