Danny McCarter Jr., a 25-year-old resident of Greenfield, California, tragically lost his life on January 28, 2011, following a violent incident. McCarter and his friend, Anabel Trujillo, were both shot on the evening of January 27, 2011, on Third Street near a park in Greenfield. The gang's involvement in various homicides in the city, including the murder of two women in a motel room in late 2009, had already put them under scrutiny.
In the wake of the murders, the Greenfield City Council, which had been divided over the thoroughness of police investigations, called for an audit of the city Police Department. The council's decision to move forward with the audit was influenced by residents' complaints about the police's handling of investigations. To assist with the investigation of McCarter and Trujillo's deaths, the Greenfield Police Department sought help from the Monterey County District Attorney's office.
Monterey County court records revealed that McCarter had a history of legal troubles, including misdemeanor and felony drug cases filed against him since 2006. His criminal record also included a felony assault complaint from 2009 and a felony property offense from March 2010. Despite his criminal background, McCarter was remembered by his family and friends as a well-liked individual who enjoyed playing sports and spending time with his loved ones.
