In the spring of 2017, the persistent plague of violence in Baltimore claimed another life. Tomez Lee, a 32-year-old African-American man, was gunned down on May 15th in the Brooklyn neighborhood of the city. The fatal shooting occurred in the 1000 block of Washburn Avenue, a street already familiar with the sounds of gunfire and the sorrow that follows. His death added to a particularly violent year for Baltimore, which saw a staggering number of homicides.
