On April 22, 2009, Alex Cortes, a 13-year-old boy from King City, California, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident. Alex was playing video games with friends in the garage of a house on Beech Street when the attack occurred. The assailants, believed to be gang members, approached the house and fired multiple shots into the garage, striking Alex and several others. Alex was shot in the head and died at the scene.
Another victim, 18-year-old Abel Silva, also succumbed to his injuries the following day at a hospital. Three other individuals were injured in the shooting, with one suffering a shattered spinal cord and another being critically wounded.
The King City police, along with the Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force, launched an investigation into the shooting. Despite gathering leads and receiving tips from the public, no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The police believe the gunmen were gang members, but it remains unclear whether the victims were specifically targeted or if the shooting was a random act of violence. Witnesses reported seeing the assailants flee the scene in a van, possibly green in color.
Over the years, the case has remained unsolved, with no significant breakthroughs or arrests. The National Organization of Parents of Murdered Children has offered a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the deaths of Alex Cortes and Abel Silva. The community continues to seek justice for the young lives lost in this senseless act of violence.
