Concepcion Esparza, aged 36, tragically lost her life on January 6, 1990, in King City, California. The incident occurred at the Silva Ranch, where she lived with her family. On that fateful evening, Concepcion was at home with her cousin, Jose Luis Parra Hernandez, and her 12-year-old son, Luis Orlando Esparza. Her husband, Ramon E. Rios, who was intoxicated after consuming a significant amount of alcohol, arrived home and found Concepcion drinking with Hernandez.
This led to a heated argument, during which Rios, in a fit of rage, retrieved a firearm and began shooting.
The first shots fired by Rios tragically struck and killed his son, Luis Orlando Esparza, who was in his bedroom watching television. Following this, Rios turned his attention to Concepcion, who was attempting to hide behind the kitchen table. He shot her multiple times, resulting in her death. Hernandez, who tried to flee the scene, was also shot and killed by Rios. After committing these heinous acts, Rios fled to San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico, where he lived under an assumed identity until he was eventually reported by a relative and extradited back to the United States.
Ramon E. Rios was subsequently arrested and charged with the murders of Concepcion Esparza, Luis Orlando Esparza, and Jose Luis Parra Hernandez. During his trial, Rios claimed that the shootings were acts of self-defense, stating that he believed his life was in danger. However, the jury found him guilty of three counts of first-degree murder. The court sentenced Rios to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, along with additional firearm enhancements. His conviction was upheld on appeal, and he remains incarcerated, serving his sentence for the brutal murders of his family members.
