Robert D. Melton, a police officer with the Gardena Police Department in California, succumbed to complications from gunshot wounds sustained on June 3, 1981. On that day, Officer Melton and his partner were flagged down by citizens who reported a robbery in progress near the intersection of Compton Boulevard (now Gardena Boulevard) and Vermont Avenue. The officers were informed that an elderly man had been pushed into nearby bushes.
As they approached the location, a male suspect emerged and opened fire with a rifle, critically wounding Officer Melton. His partner managed to return fire, killing the suspect. The body of the robbery victim was later found in the bushes approximately 50 yards from where Officer Melton was shot.

His condition deteriorated over the years, and due to his weakened state, he was unable to undergo necessary heart surgery. He ultimately passed away on November 1, 2003, at the age of 61.
