Officer Jackson was responding to a call when another patrol officer attempted to stop a vehicle at Orange Avenue and Garvey Avenue South. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop, leading to a high-speed pursuit on the eastbound I-10 freeway.
Officer Jackson joined the pursuit, which ended when the suspect's vehicle spun out near Holt Avenue and Garvey Avenue South.
As Officer Jackson exited his patrol car, the suspect, who had fled from a psychiatric care facility and had made suicidal threats, opened fire from within his vehicle. Officer Jackson was fatally wounded by the gunfire. Other officers at the scene returned fire, killing the suspect.
