On October 8, 1957, Officer Robert E. "Bob" Reed, a 36-year-old member of the California Highway Patrol, tragically lost his life in the line of duty near Ventura, California. Officer Reed had stopped and arrested a motorist for a traffic violation after a high-speed pursuit along U.S. Highway 101. The suspect, who had become combative during his arrest, complained of an injured ankle. In response, Officer Reed decided to transport him to the hospital instead of the jail.
