Luis Contreras Marrero, a 35-year-old resident of Lake Wales, Florida, tragically lost his life on December 24, 2022. The incident occurred at his home in the Enchanted Grove Mobile Home Park on North Scenic Highway. According to reports, Contreras Marrero was fatally shot around 11:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call the following evening, December 25, at 9:02 p.m., reporting a deceased individual at the residence.
Upon arrival, deputies found Contreras Marrero lying just inside the front door with a gunshot wound.
The investigation quickly identified the primary suspect as Jeremy Otero Marrero, the victim’s 23-year-old brother. Jeremy was arrested on December 28, 2022, by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Puerto Rico Police Department in Puerto Rico, where he was awaiting extradition to Polk County. The arrest was based on a Polk County Warrant for First Degree Murder. Detectives discovered that Jeremy and another individual, Fernando Vega Mangual, had left a gathering at Jeremy's house and traveled to the Enchanted Grove Mobile Home Park, where Jeremy allegedly shot his brother.
Further complicating the case, two other individuals were arrested during the investigation for providing false information. Fernando Vega Mangual, 23, of Dundee, and Tasha Cintron, 30, of Lake Wales, were charged with providing false information during a capital felony investigation and a criminal investigation, respectively. Both individuals misled detectives during the initial stages of the investigation, which hindered the progress of uncovering the truth.
The evidence collected during the investigation included items found in Jeremy Otero Marrero’s vehicle, which linked him to the murder. Both Jeremy and Fernando made admissions that connected them to the homicide. The professionalism and cooperation of the Puerto Rican Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service were crucial in apprehending Jeremy and bringing him to justice. The case highlights the complexities and challenges law enforcement faces in solving such tragic incidents, especially when family members are involved.
