Demetrick "Meaty" Devon Brown, a 26-year-old resident of Winter Haven, Florida, tragically lost his life on July 4, 2022, during a block party celebration. The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where a physical altercation broke out between two groups. Although Brown was not directly involved in the fight, he was fatally shot when gunfire erupted.
The investigation into his death revealed that multiple shots were fired, and Brown was struck by a bullet that ultimately led to his demise.
Following an extensive investigation, Winter Haven police arrested 47-year-old Bernard Footman on August 18, 2022. Footman, who is Brown's great-uncle, was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, tampering with physical evidence, and discharging a firearm in public. The arrest was based on eyewitness testimony and physical evidence, including shell casings recovered from the scene that matched those found in Footman's vehicle. Additionally, firearms seized from Footman included one that used the same type of ammunition as the casings found at the scene.
Despite the arrest, Brown's family remains divided and skeptical about Footman's involvement. Some family members, including Brown's father, Roger Campbell, believe that Footman is innocent and that the real perpetrator is still at large. They argue that Footman would not harm his own family and that the police may have arrested the wrong person.
