Fernando Batista Montero, a 41-year-old resident of Cape Coral, Florida, tragically lost his life on June 4, 2022. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when Montero was found dead in the driveway of a home on Southwest 10th Terrace. According to reports, Montero had been involved in an argument with two other men at the residence. Following the altercation, Montero got into his SUV and began to back out of the driveway.
It was at this moment that the two men, identified as Eduardo Ramon Troche-Rodriguez and Jose Alberdi Maldonado, retrieved firearms and opened fire on Montero, striking him multiple times. Montero succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Cape Coral Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the murder. Within a month of the incident, authorities were able to identify and apprehend the suspects. Jose Alberdi Maldonado was the first to be arrested. He was located in Lexington, Kentucky, and taken into custody on charges of second-degree murder and robbery with a firearm. Maldonado was extradited to Lee County, Florida, where he faced trial. In April 2023, Maldonado pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Eduardo Ramon Troche-Rodriguez, the second suspect, was also apprehended in Lexington, Kentucky. Troche-Rodriguez faced similar charges of second-degree murder and robbery with a firearm. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison for his role in the crime. The arrests and subsequent convictions of Maldonado and Troche-Rodriguez brought some measure of justice to Montero's family, who had been devastated by the loss of their loved one.
The case highlighted the swift and effective response of the Cape Coral Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, which worked diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice.
