Zaire Roberts, a 23-year-old resident of Palm Coast, Florida, was fatally shot on December 29, 2021, during a home invasion robbery. According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Roberts was involved in a planned robbery at a residence on Regent Lane, under the guise of a marijuana purchase. The plan was orchestrated by Roberts along with his accomplices, Kwentel Moultrie and Taylor Manjarres.
The trio intended to rob a drug dealer, Danial Marashi, who was known to have a significant amount of cash on him. On the night of the incident, Manjarres entered the home to distract Marashi while Roberts and Moultrie waited outside. However, the situation quickly escalated when Marashi confronted Roberts, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Roberts shot Marashi twice in the leg, but Marashi fired back multiple rounds, striking Roberts in the chest and killing him. Marashi's injuries were not life-threatening.
Following the incident, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office conducted an extensive investigation, which included over 20 search warrants, 15 preservation orders for social media accounts and electronic devices, and more than 10 hours of interviews. The investigation revealed that Roberts, Moultrie, and Manjarres had meticulously planned the robbery. On February 25, 2022, Moultrie and Manjarres were arrested and charged with second-degree felony murder and armed burglary. The Sheriff's Office employed various investigative tactics, including monitoring social media activity, to gather evidence and apprehend the suspects.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Kwentel Moultrie pleaded no contest to the charges and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Taylor Manjarres, who was 18 at the time of the crime, received a 12-year prison sentence after pleading guilty. Although Marashi was not charged with murder or manslaughter due to acting in self-defense, his cooperation was crucial in securing the convictions of Moultrie and Manjarres. The case highlighted the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with violent crimes involving multiple parties and the necessity of sometimes relying on the cooperation of individuals involved in criminal activities to solve cases.
