Cecil V. Richardson, a 26-year-old resident of Bradenton, Florida, tragically lost his life on September 11, 2021. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex located in the 4800 block of 51st Street West. On that fateful day, Bradenton Police officers responded to a report of a shooting shortly before noon. Upon arrival, they found Richardson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts by the officers, Richardson succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Richardson and Shamar Dequez Johnson, who was 24 years old at the time. Witnesses reported seeing Johnson and a woman, Chanelle Michelle Lawson, leaving the area immediately after the shooting. Lawson, who had previously dated Richardson and was in a relationship with Johnson at the time, was arrested on the same day and charged with accessory to murder. Johnson was apprehended on October 22, 2021.
During the trial, Johnson claimed that he acted in self-defense. However, the jury found him guilty of the homicide. Judge Frederick Mercurio sentenced Johnson to 40 years in the Florida Department of Corrections. The case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Suzanne O’Donnell and Assistant State Attorney Scott Callin, with significant assistance from the Manatee County Homicide Investigation Unit and the Bradenton Police Department.
