Jose Luis Mendoza-Aguilar, a 48-year-old man from Bradenton, Florida, was tragically shot and killed on October 17, 2015. Known affectionately in his neighborhood as the "ice cream man" due to his business of selling ice cream and snacks, Mendoza-Aguilar was shot three times and succumbed to his injuries approximately five hours later. The incident occurred near Sixth Avenue East and 23rd Street, where he was found with multiple gunshot wounds and facial lacerations.
The primary suspect
in the case was Juan Carlos Ramirez-Arcos, a 34-year-old man who was living in Bradenton illegally. Ramirez-Arcos was arrested and charged with the murder of Mendoza-Aguilar. During his trial in Manatee County, Ramirez-Arcos claimed he acted in self-defense, a defense that ultimately led to his acquittal on the murder charges. Despite being acquitted of murder, further investigations revealed that Ramirez-Arcos had been residing in the United States illegally since approximately 2001.
Following the state trial, Ramirez-Arcos faced federal charges for illegal possession of a firearm. The firearm and ammunition used in the shooting had traveled in foreign and interstate commerce, respectively, leading to his indictment in federal court. Ramirez-Arcos pleaded guilty to the federal firearms offense and faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. The case was investigated by multiple agencies, including the United States Border Patrol, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Bradenton Police Department, and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
The tragic death of Jose Luis Mendoza-Aguilar not only highlighted issues of illegal immigration and gun control but also left a lasting impact on the Bradenton community, where he was a well-known and beloved figure.
