Anthony Scott, a 24-year-old resident of Homestead, FL, tragically lost his life on December 17, 2020, following a violent incident in South Miami-Dade. The events unfolded in the early hours of the morning, around 2 a.m., when Scott and another individual, Edward Clay, attempted to rob Travis Scott, an off-duty Miami-Dade Corrections officer. During the robbery attempt, both Anthony Scott and Clay were armed with handguns and fired shots, grazing Travis Scott's left hand.
In response, Travis Scott returned fire, hitting Anthony Scott in the neck. Despite being transported to Homestead Hospital and later to Jackson South, Anthony Scott succumbed to his injuries.
The incident also resulted in injuries to two other individuals. Najah McNear, a 22-year-old woman, was caught in the crossfire and sustained a gunshot wound to her leg. She was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical but stable condition. Additionally, a third victim, a 30-year-old off-duty Miami-Dade Corrections officer, had his hand grazed by a bullet and was treated at the scene.
Following the shooting, Edward Clay and another man, Joe Smith, who witnessed the robbery and shootout, took Anthony Scott to Homestead Hospital. Clay was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, attempted armed robbery, and tampering with physical evidence. Joe Smith was charged with tampering with physical evidence and accessory after the fact.
The investigation into the incident revealed that the attempted robbery and subsequent shootout were the primary causes of Anthony Scott's death. The Miami-Dade Police Department conducted a thorough investigation, and the case garnered significant attention due to the involvement of an off-duty corrections officer and the violent nature of the crime.
