Carltravious Jones, a 20-year-old resident of Vero Beach, Florida, tragically lost his life on January 19, 2020, during a botched drug deal. The incident occurred at the BP Express Mart located at 20th Avenue Southwest and Oslo Road. Jones, accompanied by four passengers, had arranged to meet Camden Stukins, then 18, to purchase marijuana. The meet-up was organized through Snapchat. Upon arrival, Stukins approached the front passenger window of Jones' vehicle to conduct the transaction.
However, when Jones failed to pay for the marijuana, Stukins became enraged and fired multiple gunshots into the vehicle, striking both Jones and 17-year-old Almajzha Johnson, who was seated in the front passenger seat. Despite being shot in the head, Jones attempted to flee the scene, resulting in a series of collisions with other vehicles before ultimately succumbing to his injuries at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital later that night.
The aftermath of the shooting led to a swift investigation by the Indian River County Sheriff's Office. Camden Stukins was arrested approximately an hour and a half after the incident at his home. He faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, sale or possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, shooting or throwing a deadly missile, and tampering with or destroying evidence. During the trial, it was revealed that the altercation stemmed from Jones' failure to pay for the marijuana, which provoked Stukins to open fire. The prosecution argued that Stukins' actions were deliberate and reckless, leading to the tragic death of Jones and the critical injury of Johnson.
In May 2024, Camden Stukins, now 22, was sentenced to life in prison for the second-degree murder of Carltravious Jones. The jury convicted Stukins of second-degree murder and other related charges, including attempted manslaughter and selling marijuana with a firearm. Circuit Judge Robert Meadows imposed the mandatory life sentence, along with two additional 15-year prison terms for the other charges, to be served consecutively. During the sentencing, Jones' father, Carlton Jones, expressed his grief and frustration, believing that the evidence could have supported a first-degree murder charge. Despite the conviction, the emotional toll on Jones' family remained profound, as they continued to mourn the loss of a beloved son and brother.
