Around 9 p.m., Richard Peterson III, a 23-year-old male, approached the vehicle from behind and confronted Phillips with a shotgun.
Peterson, who had a history of felony convictions, poked the firearm into Phillips' chest multiple times. When Phillips reached for his legally owned handgun to defend himself, Peterson shot him once, resulting in his death.
The investigation into Phillips' murder revealed that Peterson had fled the scene, leaving behind a black Reebok sneaker. Forensic analysis of the DNA from the shoe matched Peterson, leading to his identification and subsequent arrest. Peterson was charged with first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery. The motive behind the attack appeared to be robbery, although Phillips and Peterson did not know each other.
