Cody Hunt, a 30-year-old club promoter from Winter Haven, Florida, tragically lost his life on September 11, 2019. Hunt, who was well-known in Polk County for his work in the entertainment industry, was fatally shot in the neck. The incident occurred while Winter Haven police officers were investigating a separate shooting in the Florence Villa neighborhood. As officers were on Palmetto Avenue, they heard additional gunshots and were soon approached by Hunt, who collapsed near their patrol car.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Hunt succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Hunt's death quickly led to the arrest of Debonaire Antoine McIntosh, also 30 years old. McIntosh was seen fleeing the scene and was subsequently taken into custody. During questioning, McIntosh claimed that he encountered Hunt shortly after the first shooting incident. According to McIntosh, Hunt confronted him, asking whether they were going to "fight it out or shoot it out." McIntosh alleged that he saw Hunt's hands in his pockets and, fearing for his safety, fired multiple shots at Hunt. McIntosh was charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear in court shortly after his arrest.
The case drew significant attention due to the boldness of the crime, which occurred in close proximity to law enforcement officers. Public Safety Director Charlie Bird emphasized the audacity of the shooter, noting that such individuals pose a significant threat to public safety. The investigation into the initial shooting, which involved another victim named Rorey Copeland, 41, with non-life-threatening injuries, continued separately, with no immediate connection established between the two incidents.
Hunt's death and the subsequent arrest of McIntosh highlighted the ongoing issues of gun violence and public safety in the Winter Haven area. The community mourned the loss of a prominent figure in the local entertainment scene, while law enforcement officials worked diligently to ensure justice was served.
