Curtis Israel Gray, an 18-year-old African American male from Palm Coast, Florida, tragically lost his life on April 13, 2019. Curtis was a promising high school senior, known for his athletic prowess in football and track and field. On the night of his death, Curtis was found with a single gunshot wound to his abdomen in a parking lot outside a smoke shop and coin laundry on Belle Terre Parkway in Palm Coast.
Despite being airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation into Curtis's death revealed that he had approached an SUV in the parking lot when he was shot. Witnesses provided a description of the shooter, which led authorities to a residence a few miles from the crime scene. There, they found the SUV and other evidence, including marijuana, firearms, and the identification card of Marion Leo Gavins Jr., a 17-year-old African American male who matched the description given by witnesses. Marion Gavins had a history of legal troubles, including arrests for selling marijuana, domestic violence, and violation of home detention.
Marion Gavins was arrested the day after the shooting and was later charged with first-degree murder. The investigation uncovered that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between Curtis and Marion, possibly related to derogatory social media posts about a deceased friend of Curtis. Surveillance footage from the smoke shop provided further evidence of the events leading up to the shooting.
In October 2021, Marion Gavins pled guilty to the murder of Curtis Israel Gray. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the first-degree murder charge, with an additional five years for an attack on a corrections deputy while awaiting trial. Gavins' sentence will be subject to review after 25 years. This tragic incident not only ended the life of a young, vibrant individual but also highlighted the devastating impact of youth violence and the importance of addressing underlying social issues.
