The investigation revealed that the shooting was the result of a confrontation between Knowles and two men, Jordan Dawkins and Montrell Rolle. Dawkins, 20, and Rolle, 21, were both charged with first-degree murder with a firearm, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery. Dawkins claimed that the altercation stemmed from an incident two days prior, where Knowles allegedly robbed Dawkins' girlfriend of $3,000 and pistol-whipped him. On the morning of the shooting, Dawkins and Rolle, along with two others, went to the Motel 6 to confront Knowles and retrieve the stolen money.
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the investigation. Initially, Knowles identified Dawkins as the shooter, but video evidence later revealed that it was Rolle who fired the fatal shots. The footage showed Dawkins and Rolle exiting their vehicle and approaching Knowles. Dawkins was seen physically engaging with Knowles, while Rolle was observed pointing a firearm and shooting at Knowles. Both men fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
The legal proceedings that followed saw both Dawkins and Rolle facing serious charges.
