Jude Onyegbulum Osuji Jr., a 28-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on February 13, 2018, in Gainesville, FL. The incident occurred at the Summer Place Villas apartment complex, where Osuji Jr. was employed. On that fateful day, Cedric Tremaine Plummer, a 23-year-old resident of the complex, entered the office and, without uttering a word, fatally shot Osuji Jr. and another employee, Robert Earl Brumbaugh, a 61-year-old Caucasian male.
The motive behind the shooting was linked to a dispute over property damage in Plummer's apartment.
Following the shooting, Plummer kidnapped a 19-year-old female employee, Hailey Louise Roberts, at gunpoint and forced her to drive him to Georgia. The authorities apprehended Plummer a few hours later in Lowndes County, Georgia, where he was taken into custody without resistance. Roberts was found unharmed but emotionally distressed.
Plummer was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of kidnapping. He was held in the Alachua County Jail without bond for the murder charges and with a $500,000 bond for the kidnapping charge. The case took a significant turn when Plummer was deemed incompetent to stand trial after evaluations by clinical psychologists and a psychiatrist. He was subsequently committed to a state mental hospital for competency restoration.
