Raheim Develle Fields, a 22-year-old African American male from Fort Myers, FL, was tragically shot and killed on the evening of December 12, 2017. The incident occurred in the Campbell Acres neighborhood, a small community with only one way in and out, which is located just west of the Penny Saver Supermarket on Ortiz Avenue. Fields was found suffering from a gunshot wound under a large tree on Zana Drive, where at least 20 bullet casings were discovered nearby.
Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics who arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting was reported around 6:20 p.m., Fields succumbed to his injuries.
Fields had returned from his construction job and was on his way to the Penny Saver Supermarket when the shooting occurred. His mother, Simone Campbell, who has lived in the Campbell Acres community for over a decade, expressed her grief and disbelief over the loss of her oldest child. Fields was known for his cheerful demeanor and willingness to help others, and he leaves behind four children, with a fifth child expected to be born in January.
The Fort Myers Police Department, including the Gang Suppression Unit, responded to the scene and began an investigation into Fields' death. Despite the presence of numerous detectives and police cruisers, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The police have pleaded for tips from the public, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in solving the case. The neighborhood's layout, with only one entrance and exit, suggests that someone must have witnessed the incident, but no one has come forward with information.
Fields' death marked the 10th homicide in Fort Myers for the year 2017.
