Kelli J. Doherty, a 20-year-old woman from Tequesta, Florida, was tragically killed on February 5, 2017, in a shooting incident in Jupiter, Florida. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Mohawk Street, near Jupiter Christian School. Along with Kelli, two other individuals, Brandi El-Salhy, a 24-year-old woman from Gainesville, and Sean P. Henry, a 25-year-old man from Jupiter, were also found dead at the scene.
The victims were discovered after neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots.
The investigation revealed that the shootings were not random acts of violence. Law enforcement officials quickly identified a person of interest and later arrested Christopher Vasata, a 24-year-old man, in connection with the homicides. Vasata faced multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder with a firearm, one count of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, and one count of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a felon.
The case took a significant turn when Vasata was found guilty on all counts. However, the jury declined to sentence him to death, and he was instead given a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The trial revealed that the motive behind the shootings was related to disputes over drug sales, turf, and debts. The victims were gathered around a backyard fire pit when the attack occurred.
In addition to Vasata, another individual, Marcus Steward, was also implicated in the case. Steward, who was 31 years old at the time of his trial, faced similar charges. Despite initial findings of incompetency to stand trial due to intellectual disability, Steward was later found competent and is awaiting trial. The ongoing legal proceedings continue to bring attention to the tragic events of that night and the impact on the victims' families.
The community of Jupiter was deeply affected by the incident, with residents expressing their shock and grief over the loss of young lives. Memorial services were held to honor the victims, and the local police department, in partnership with the FBI, continues to investigate the case, offering a cash reward for additional information.
