Makayla Dennard, a 15-year-old African American girl from Riviera Beach, Florida, tragically lost her life on December 23, 2016. She was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting while sitting in a vehicle on West 36th Street in Riviera Beach, just days before Christmas. The incident also resulted in the wounding of her cousin, Nikobra Stringer, who was 20 years old at the time.
Makayla succumbed to her injuries two days later, on December 25, 2016.
The investigation into Makayla's death led to the indictment of three individuals: Torrance Smith, Walter Brooms, and Tiyone Samuels. Smith and Brooms, who were 18 and 16 years old respectively at the time of the shooting, were charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Samuels, who was also a juvenile, faced similar charges. The prosecution argued that the shooting was an act of retaliation related to earlier gunfire that day, with Makayla being an unintended victim caught in the crossfire.
During the trial, the defense attorneys for Smith and Brooms contended that their clients acted in self-defense after being fired upon first. They claimed that the fatal shot that killed Makayla was fired by someone standing across the street, not by their clients. Despite the prosecution's efforts to prove otherwise, the jury found Smith and Brooms not guilty of first-degree murder in April 2022. The trial for Samuels was scheduled to take place later that year.
Makayla's death remains a poignant reminder of the senseless violence that can erupt in communities, leaving families devastated and seeking justice. The case highlights the complexities of legal proceedings in violent crimes and the challenges faced by prosecutors in securing convictions.
