Steve Jones, a 45-year-old resident of Homestead, FL, tragically lost his life on November 6, 2016. The incident occurred during a family gathering in the 700 block of Northwest Ninth Avenue. According to reports, the suspect, Marcus Rankins, 32, drove by the gathering at a high speed, which led to gestures and comments from those present, including Jones. Rankins then turned his vehicle around, confronted Jones, and fired two shots in his direction.
The confrontation escalated as Rankins chased Jones to the back of the home and shot him in the chest. Despite being rushed to Jackson South Community Hospital, Jones was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, Marcus Rankins turned himself in to the police, accompanied by his father, who handed over the firearm used in the shooting. Rankins confessed to the shooting, claiming self-defense and stating that Jones had been a bully. He expressed relief at no longer having to look over his shoulder, fearing Jones would come after him. Rankins was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond.
