Javon Norel Woodson, a 39-year-old African American man, was fatally shot on July 2, 2016, in Belle Glade, Florida. The incident occurred near Southwest Avenue C and Southwest Sixth Street, where Woodson and Glover Lee Williams, a 29-year-old African American man, engaged in an argument over property that Williams claimed Woodson had taken and not returned.
The confrontation escalated, and Williams, who was reportedly tired of Woodson's actions, pulled out a gun and shot Woodson multiple times until the gun would no longer fire. Woodson was found with at least one gunshot wound to the chest.
Following the shooting, Williams fled the scene on his motorized bike, disposed of the gun, and went to his father's house in Pahokee, where he confessed to the shooting. He later turned himself in to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Williams was initially charged with first-degree murder but later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with credit for the time he had already spent in jail awaiting trial.
In court, Woodson's family expressed their grief and the senselessness of the crime. Maurice Lincoln, Woodson's brother, spoke about the emotional toll the loss had taken on him, while Valshalata Greer, Woodson's girlfriend, expressed her lack of sympathy for Williams and the suffering he had caused their family. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of unresolved disputes and the impact of violence on the community.
