Lalita Odom, a 23-year-old African American woman, was tragically killed on June 20, 2016, in Fort Myers, Florida. Lalita, affectionately known as "Lala" to her friends and family, was found shot to death behind a home on Dora Street in the Dunbar neighborhood. The incident occurred early in the morning, and her body was discovered around 8 a.m. Lalita was a mother to two young children, a 5-month-old and a 2-year-old, who were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

investigation into Lalita's death revealed that she had been experiencing domestic violence issues with Benjamin Allen, the father of her 1-year-old child. Lalita had planned to file a restraining order against Allen on the day she was killed, following threats he made over the weekend. Unfortunately, she did not get the chance to do so. Lalita's family had noticed bruises on her and had urged her to leave the abusive relationship.
Benjamin Allen, 21 years old at the time, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, a weapons offense, and tampering with evidence. He was already in Lee County Jail on unrelated charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, when the charges for Lalita's murder were filed. Allen's bond had not been set in the homicide case.
Lalita's family expressed a mix of relief and sorrow following Allen's arrest. Her mother, Jenell Odom, and her sister, Queenette Marshall, were grateful for the progress in the case, though it took four months to reach this point. The family held a small celebration at Lalita's grave, bringing flowers and balloons to honor her memory. Lalita's mother, who had lost another child to violence in Fort Myers in 2009, emphasized the importance of faith and community support during such difficult times.
