The incident occurred when her husband, Darrell Reid, accidentally shot her in the head while cleaning his gun at their home. Katie Reid was immediately rushed to Florida Hospital Apopka, where she was later pronounced dead. The couple, who were both pastors at Happy Hill Ministries, had been married since 1980 and had known each other since they were 12 years old.
