Curtis Lovonius Smith, a 61-year-old African American man, tragically lost his life on June 2, 2015, in Miami Gardens, Florida. Smith, a respiratory therapist at Jackson Memorial Hospital, was fatally shot while mowing his lawn in front of his home. The incident occurred in the 17600 block of Northwest 14th Avenue. Surveillance footage from a neighbor's home captured two individuals approaching Smith, leading to a scuffle before he was shot multiple times.
Smith succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The initial investigation suggested that robbery might have been the motive behind the attack, although no clear description of the suspects was available at the time. The community was left in shock, with neighbors describing Smith as a kind and hardworking individual who often spent his days off maintaining his yard.
Nearly two years after the murder, a significant breakthrough occurred in the case. Dequentin Thomas, a 22-year-old man, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with Smith's death. Thomas was already in federal custody for an unrelated case when he was identified as a suspect. A .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol, seized during his arrest, was linked to the crime scene through matching shell casings. Thomas was held without bond, and the case against him proceeded through the legal system.
The arrest brought some relief to Smith's family and the Miami Gardens community, who had been seeking justice for nearly two years.
