Rodney Smith, a 26-year-old Black man, was killed on the evening of December 5, 2013, in Baltimore’s Central Park Heights neighborhood, a stretch of West Baltimore where winter comes early and streetlights cast long shadows into the alleys. Not long before night fully settled in, violence found him in the 3300 block of Virginia Avenue, where investigators would later comb through an alley and a nearby yard trying to piece together what happened in the moments before the shots.
